Vision 2020 is getting ready to help people usher in Halloween while also seeing what’s available downtown.

Vision 2020’s Destination Downtown committee will hold the second annual Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 25, in downtown from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., festivities will include trick-or-treating at several downtown merchants, pumpkin crafting with styrofoam pumpkins, games and prizes, and Matchbox Theatre mini-shows. At 1 p.m., there will be a children’s costume contest with prizes, followed by a 2:30 p.m. showing of “Casper” at the Paramount Theatre.

Vision 2020 Director of Vision Creation Laura Helle said organizers hope the event will bring more people downtown.

“We want to give people a reason to go take a look at what’s there, for them to enjoy and have a positive outlook of what’s downtown,” Helle said.

Helle said more than 300 children participated in the inaugural Fall Fest last year. Organizers hope for good turnout again this year, but Helle said weather could be a major factor. Yet she said families enjoyed the event last year, and it gives them an alternative to the traditional trick-or-treating events.

“Families like these kinds of day events much more than they like walking around block after block in the dark tricker treating to different houses, so we’re happy to have it and bring people downtown,” Helle said.

The Destination Downtown committee partnered with several groups to bring the event to Austin, including the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce, Hormel Foods Corp.’s Austin Plant, South Central Athlete, Piggy Blues and Super Fresh.
