The Austin City Council hired a new city administrator and came to terms with its old one all in one night.

Council members unanimously accepted a severance agreement with former city head Jim Hurm Monday, which will give $130,000 to Hurm — about $62,000 from the city and the rest from the city’s insurance policy.

City officials deferred to the city attorney’s office over the deal, which comes after the council fired Hurm last December. Since Hurm’s termination, both sides have negotiated the terms of his severance, which city leaders said ultimately went to arbitration.

The council fired Hurm after a job evaluation done last year showed city department heads weren’t pleased with Hurm’s performance and criticized his communication, management, and leadership. Since then, city staff took up Hurm’s duties while the council went through an administrative search process. Finance Director Tom Dankert acted as the head of the city and took over as interim executive director of the Austin Port Authority.
