Best Bets: Get ready for a good fall weekend

This weekend is filled with books, crafts and great food. Show school spirit at the homecoming game, watch entertainment at the Riverland theater and stock up on books for the coming winter months.

1. Fall used book sale

10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, Austin Public Library

Thursday is the members only pre-sale from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memberships are available and may be purchased at the door for $10 per household. The sale to the general public will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Saturday will also feature a $5 bag sale from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The sale is sponsored by nonprofit Friends of the Austin Public Library. The money raised will support library programs, author visits, the summer reading program and library projects. Austin community members donated not only used books, but also DVDs, VHS tapes, music and audio tapes.

2. Austin Packers Homecoming Game

7 p.m., Friday, Wescott Field

Join the Austin Packers as they play the annual homecoming game this Friday. Cheer them as they take on the Winona Winhawks at the Haas Stadium.

3. ‘God Is Not Dead’

6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Crane Community Chapel 1111 – 9th Street NE, Austin

The movie “God Is Not Dead” will be shown at Crane Community Chapel. There is no charge. Children ages 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Come and bring a friend.

4. Some Enchanted Evening:

7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Frank W. Bridges Theatre, Riverland Community College

Celebrate some of the most beloved songs ever performed on Broadway, including classics from “Oklahoma!,” “Carousel,” “State Fair,” “South Pacific,” “The King and I” and “The Sound of Music.” Appropriate for all ages. Season tickets are $50 and are on sale through Oct. 12. Individual tickets are $16 and may be purchased online at www.riverland.edu/tickets or in person and by phone. 5. Fall Festival

10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Grand Meadow Lutheran Church, 115 First St. Northeast

There will be fresh homemade donuts, a bake sale, produce, crafts and handcrafted items, lefse and canned meat. The menu includes sloppy joes, potato salad or chips, beans, choice of pie, and a beverage. Adults cost $8, ages 6-12 cost $6, and preschoolers are free. There will also be raffle tickets for quilts, and a People’s Choice Award for hand-crafted goods.

6. Brownsdale Fire Department Fish Fry

4 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Brownsdale Fire Station

The Brownsdale Fire Department is having a fundraiser. For questions please call Dave Pike at 507-438-1070. Adults are $10, Children 12 and under $6.50. Kids Hotdog Meals are available. There will also be baked potatoes, cole slaw, beans, coffee, milk or lemonade.
