Best Bets: From porcelain to paint to parties

The Austin area boasts tons of fun this weekend with exciting works of art, painting with the family, and preparing for winter by getting on the ice early. There’s sure to be something for everyone this weekend.

1. Petals and Wings

6-9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Holiday Inn Conference Center

The world organization of China Painters Midwest Porcelain Art Show is coming to Austin Thursday through Saturday at the Holiday Inn Conference Center. This is the organization’s first four-state regional convention covering Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota. The event is free and open to the public. There will be demonstrations of China painting, paint-alongs, different displays of painted porcelain, and vendors selling supplies to get started. The show will also host a competition of hand-painted porcelain and raffles. There will be pieces for display and for sale.

2. The Arc Mower County Halloween Party

6-8 p.m. Friday, Mower County Senior Center

The best party of the year. Dress up in wild costumes and dance the evening away to old favorites like “Monster Mash,” “Thriller,” and other spooky tunes. People of all ages and abilities are invited for great music, a costume contest, refreshments and prizes. Cost is $3 per person. For more information, call 507-433-8994.

3. Family Paint

10 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, Austin Artworks Center Classroom

Get out and enjoy Saturday morning with the kids. Adults and children will each have a canvas of their own to paint in this class as well as a unique design to follow. The end product is yours to keep. Cost for Austin Area Commission for the Arts members is $35 for adults and $25 for children. Cost for non-members is $40 for adults, $35 for children.

4. Chili Cook-off

4-8 p.m. Saturday, American Legion in Austin

The American Legion Riders bring back the chili cook off on Saturday. The event is open to the public and cost $10 to enter your chili.

5. Public Skate

3-5 p.m. Friday, 3:45-5 p.m. Saturday, Riverside Arena

Open skate is open to the public. Cost is $4 to skate. Bring your own skates or rent a pair for $1. For more information, call 507-433-1881.
