A frightful array of October games

Halloween is a special time of year where our thoughts turn to ghosts and goblins galore.

It’s also a great time to break out a scary game or two to give ourselves a good fright. There are few better opportunities to play horror games than this time of year, when a lot of spooky games traditionally hit shelves.

While it’s easy to find good horror games online — Think “Silent Hill” or “Resident Evil” — it can also be fun to pick up a ghastly fun game or a true thriller this time of year. Here’s a quick rundown on some of the Halloween-themed games coming out this month.

 “Alien: Isolation”

Oct. 7; 360, PC, PS3, PS4, XB1

A new game based on the “Aliens” movie franchise that isn’t inherently terrible. In fact, critics are praising “Alien: Isolation” for its stealthy gameplay and interesting pacing. This is a rare example of a movie tie-in which improves upon its universe.

 “The Evil Within”

Oct. 14; 360, PC, PS3, PS4, XB1

This anticipated thriller could be the latest survival horror game to make a big impact. Directed by Shinji Mikami, the mastermind behind the original “Resident Evil,” this title could continue a long legacy of spooky horror games.

“The Walking Dead: Season 2”

Oct. 14; PS3, 360

This collection of “The Walking Dead” video games may not have been as highly regarded as the first season, but there’s still reason to check out this point-and-click adventure. The second season follows young Clementine as she struggles to survive against zombies.

 “Bayonetta 2”

Oct. 24; WiiU

Not quite as scary as some of the other games, “Bayonetta 2” is the sequel to the first action game starring the hellish witch with way too much sex appeal. Bayonetta journeys to hell to retrieve the soul of her dear friend, with an absurd amount of boss battles, cinematic action moments, and sexual pandering to match.

 “The Voice,”

Oct. 21; PS3, 360, Wii, WiiU

Frightening for an entirely different reason, “The Voice” is based on the popular TV show and allows players to sing to the top through pop, country, R&B and rock songs. Truly a terrifying game to pick up for your Halloween party as you find out which of your friends and family members can and can’t sing.
