Two Austin men were arrested early Thursday morning for stealing over $1,500 worth of merchandise from the Walmart Supercenter in Austin.

According to Police Chief Brian Krueger, a 28-year-old and a 25-year-old were arrested at about 1 a.m. Friday when an officer on a routine patrol saw them hurriedly loading their black Lincoln Navigator SUV with merchandise through the Walmart garden center. They had one regular shopping cart and one flat-bottom cart filled with items. After confirming with Walmart that it was not employees, the officer looped around and asked the men what they were doing. Both men refused to talk and stared straight ahead.

The officer told the men to get out of the car, to which one replied, ā€œIā€™m just the driver.ā€ Both eventually admitted to taking the items without purchasing them. The officer also noticed a breach point in the fence in the garden center which was large enough for an individual to gain access.

Some of the items they had taken were baby formula, diapers, an HP computer, a baby swing, a crib, a baby changer and a car booster seat. The items rang up to $1,552.04.

Both men were arrested and taken without incident to the Mower County Jail where they were held for formal complaint.
