The Austin man accused of shooting 38-year-old Tyrone Maddox was charged with attempted murder Thursday in Mower County District Court.

Tyrone Price, 28, faces second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault charges.

According to a court complaint, police arrested Price in connection with the shooting shortly after they were called to the scene at 414 Fourth St. SE. Witnesses reported Maddox yelling he’d been shot, though they weren’t sure who had shot him. Another witness reported a silver four-door car leaving the area shortly after the shooting, which led police to suspect Price.

Officers found Price getting into his silver jaguar in front of his home at the 800 block of Fifth Street Northeast, according to the complaint. Police saw a .357 caliber bullet sitting on top of insulation in an unfinished wall inside Price’s garage, where they later found several more bullets and a Ruger LCR .357 magnum revolver.

Price told police he had run several errands throughout the day and had stopped at home to use the bathroom. He denied being involved in the shooting or owning the gun and also told police someone must have put the gun inside his garage wall, according to the complaint.

However, Price allegedly asked several times about prison terms related to an attempted murder charge. He also refused to provide a DNA sample, according to the complaint.

Maddox was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin and was later airlifted to Mayo Clinic Hospital’s St. Marys Campus in Rochester. Police said Maddox was listed in critical condition as of Thursday morning. Police Chief Brian Krueger said Maddox was shot once in the upper torso and twice in the leg.

Price’s next court appearance is Oct. 2.
