The Packers showed just exactly how much firepower they can muster when needed as they blasted Pine Island-Zumbrota-Mazeppa (2-2-1 overall) 11-0 in a boys soccer game at Art Hass Stadium Saturday.

Austin (1-1 overall) held a 3-0 lead at the half and then it came out in the second half with a scoring flurry. The Packers scored five goals in a span of five minutes early in the second frame to take an 8-0 lead as they rolled to the victory.

Roel Torres had two goals in that stretch and he added a third later in the period to get the hat trick.

“We just came out faster,” Torres said. “Coach told us to come out good in the second half and that’s when we shine the most. We just passed really well, we shot the ball really well and we took chances.”

Austin head coach Jens Levisen was happy with how his team responded after losing 3-2 to Mankato West last week.

“We had things that we had worked on in Friday’s practice that we wanted to improve on,” Levisen said. “We were able to accomplish those things today and that’s part of the reason we had those five goals right away in the second half.”

Ochan Ochogi had four goals and two assists in the win for the Packers, and Jeremy Olmsted added two goals.

Ochogi, a junior, is a little more used to varsity soccer now that he is in his second year with the team.

“I’m more confident this year,” he said.

Austin senior Gach Gach picked up his first career shutout in the net as he stopped all four of the shots he saw. The Packers fired 22 shots on goal in the win.

The Packers will host Winona next Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Torres said the team is planning on bringing intensity into that contest as well.

“We’re going to try and keep it like this,” Torres said. “We’re going to play every game like it’s the section final and hopefully we get to state this year.”
