Roland “Rollie” L. Dain, 92, died on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at Meadow Lakes Senior Living in Rochester.

Roland was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Sept. 8, 1921, to Calvin and Stella (Ulen) Dain. The family moved to California in 1932 and Rollie graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles in 1939. He attended one year at Compton Junior College before moving to Iowa and enrolling at Luther College in Decorah. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the 102nd Infantry Division in Germany from 1944 to 1945. Rollie then returned to Luther College and graduated in June 1948. While there, he met Marilyn Trytten and they were married Aug. 25, 1948, in Ridgeway, Iowa.

Roland worked as a social studies and speech teacher in LeRoy, Minnesota. He and Marilyn then moved to Williston, North Dakota, where he took a job at KGCX as a sports broadcaster. In 1951, they moved to Austin, Minnesota, and he worked at KAUS/KAALTV as the sports anchor. In 1956, Rollie returned to his teaching career working at Austin Public Schools. After he earned a master’s degree at Mankato State he became a guidance counselor at Austin High School. Throughout the years, he worked at Luther College and then Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, Wisconsin. Rollie retired in July 1986, and they moved to Fredericksburg, Texas, where they lived for 20 years before moving to Rochester. He enjoyed golfing, watching sports, and was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester.

Roland is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marilyn; two daughters, Laurel (Jack) Braun, of Rochester, and Kristin Dain, of Dallas, Texas; a son, Bradley (Jennifer) Dain, of Guilford, Conneticut; two grandchildren, Sarah (fiancé Randy Ekenberg) Braun, of Bloomington, Minnesota, and Andrew (Ana) Braun, of Rochester.

Roland is preceded in death by his parents.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 810 3rd Ave SE, with the Rev. Anjanette Bandel officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Decorah Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah, Iowa. Memorials can be directed to World Vision or Seasons Hospice.
