Our Opinion: Students take good step forward

Austin High School has, for some time now, taken active steps toward a greener future through various energy-saving initiatives.

This week the school took another step in that direction by installing an array of solar panels on the roof of the AHS annex. It’s a positive step that is made much more significant by the fact that this effort was led by the students themselves; the students in the Go Green Club.

Whitney Houston, in her song “Greatest Love of All” sang, “I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.” Though perhaps cliché now, the words still hold meaning, especially considering the role students played in this effort.

It shows that students today aren’t just sitting back and hoping the world will get better, but taking an active part in that future. In that way, this solar project is not only good for the school and environment, it’s good for the students, who are getting a chance to take an active part in their future.

It should be encouraging for the community to know that these students are showing the initiative to make Austin a better place.

So, if you know a student from this club, or the club leader Kate Soiney, then congratulate them on a job well done. The day is made a lot brighter through the work these students have done.
