The popularity of farmers markets continues to increase each year. Shoppers appreciate the flavor and nutritional value of “fresh” as found only in your own garden or at the farmers’ market. Second, a trust is established by talking directly with the producer to know where the food is grown and how it is grown.

In Minnesota the legal definition of a farmers’ market is: farmers’ market means an association of three or more persons who assemble at a defined location that is open to the public for the selling directly to the consumer, the products of a farm or garden occupied and cultivated by the person selling the product.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture publishes a free directory of farmers’ market in Minnesota and can also be found on line: www.minnesotagrown.com. In addition, this publication can direct you to growers locally or wherever you travel in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association works directly for growers and customers through educational workshops and legislative action to assure the safety and quality of the fruits and vegetables. Member markets are listed on their website – MFMA.org.

Many special activities are planned for National Farmers’ Market week. At Farmers’ Market Place, Oak Park Mall there will be Kids activities on Monday 4-6 and sampling some of the great summer tastes on Thursday 4-6.
