The Hayfield football team opened its season in a sludge of mud and rain, but after two weather delays, the Vikings walked away with a 36-3 win over Kingsland (0-2 overall, 0-2 SFA Blue) in Hayfield Friday.

The game was turned into a virtual non-passing contest as the conditions kept both squads on the ground.

“It was tough,” Hayfield head coach Andrew Weiers said. “There was no footing and both teams stacked the box.”

Hayfield’s Tanner Johnston opened the game with a 47-yard TD run in the first quarter to put the Vikings (1-0 overall, 1-0 SFA Blue) on top and he added a 3-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Cam Rutledge had a 1-yard TD run and a 3-yard TD run for the Vikings.

Hayfield’s Nick Maatti added a 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Hayfield’s defense twice stopped the Knights in the red zone as they only gave up one big play, a 54-yard run by Kingsland that led to a short field goal, in the win.
