Get your superhero ready for September 5K

Superheroes should start getting their costumes ready for September.

Members of Community Against Bullying, also known as CAB, and the Austin Police Officer Association are holding a 5K on September 13 to raise money to support educational opportunities to help empower kids to not become bullied or be the bully. The Superhero Dash lets participants dress up as their favorite superheros, because every child needs a superhero.

“We thought this would be fun and it matched our theme of being someone’s hero,” President of CAB Danielle Nesvold said.

This is the first year of the Superhero Dash, but not the first year of the fundraiser. Members started fundraising in February of 2011 with a “take it to the street” approach, standing on street corners with buckets. This year, they decided to do something different.

“We thought this would be a way to connect with the community a little more directly,” Nesvold said.

The money brings speakers and other presenters to the Austin Public Schools to talk about bully prevention.

“A lot of times it’s about teaching kids to be the change in the world that they want to see,” Nesvold said. “It’s about continuing to educate our students and our parents.”
