Advocacy program there to assist

Published 5:48 pm Saturday, August 2, 2014

We would like to remind the community that the Advocacy Program at the Mower County Senior Center is here to assist you. The mission of the Mower County Senior Advocacy Program is to assist, provide support and resources that will allow older adults to live as safely and independently as possible in the community.

Some ways that we can assist you include: money management, check writing, interpreting bills, balancing checkbooks, housing issues, explaining and sorting mail, helping to complete various applications for assistance, completing health care directives and power of attorney forms, assisting with various forms and confusing paperwork.

The Caregivers Support Group meets at the Senior Center at 10:30 a.m. every third Thursday. This month the meeting will be held Aug 21. All caregivers are invited.

Our meetings are informal. We provide information on a topic of interests and time is given for open discussion. It is a time for caregivers to share with one another and discuss the challenges and triumphs that they face. If you need respite care or if you have any questions, please call the advocacy office, Marianne at 507-433-3462 or Nancy at 507-433-8376.

You may also call the advocacy office to schedule an appointment with Nancy or Marianne to discuss caregiving support issues in private.

In addition to our monthly caregiver support group we offer a telephone reassurance program. The telephone reassurance program is designed to provide consistent and timely phone contact for individuals desiring daily contact to assure their safety and well being.

The Senior Center has a group of trained volunteers that provide respite care. Volunteers come into the home and will visit with your loved one, giving the caregiver much needed free time for themselves.

Advocacy Office hours:

Nancy, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday; Marianne, 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

We encourage you to call to set up an appointment. This will assure that we are available when you need to speak with us.

The Mower County Fair starts for 2014 on Tuesday. As always the Senior Center will be there. We will have the big flour sack towels embroidered on for sale and the refrigerator towels. We also have an A/C unit if anyone needs to cool down. Stop by and say, Hi. See you at the Fair.
