A million dollar win: Austin man wins Powerball

Austin resident Robert Shatek won $1 million in Saturday’s Powerball drawing.

Shatek wasted little time, as he arrived at Lottery headquarters in Roseville Monday morning with his winning ticket in hand to claim his prize.

Shatek was quick to discover his big win, too. After making a stop for the Sunday paper Sunday morning, he had his Powerball ticket scanned at a local lottery retailer. He learned the second line on his three-line quick-pick ticket matched the first five winning numbers drawn. Shatek initially thought he won $200,000.

“I would have been happy with that,” he said in a press release.

After looking at a player brochure, Shatek realized his ticket was actually worth $1 million.

“It was a nice surprise,” he said in the release. “I don’t even think I ended up getting the Sunday paper.”

Shatek purchased the winning ticket at Apollo III, located at 3011 W. Oakland Ave. in Austin. The winning Powerball numbers drawn on Aug. 16 were 7-8-17-48-59 and the Powerball was 9.
