A 51-year-old Austin man is in jail after he repeatedly called police to demand a ride home.

Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger said police arrested the man at about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday at the 700 block of Ninth Street Northwest for making emergency calls with no existing emergency.

Krueger said the man called 911 twice and the police department’s regular phone line six times asking for a ride home from police. Mower County dispatchers told the man he didn’t have an emergency and asked him not to call again.

Police finally tracked the man down at Ninth Street Northwest. The man took a preliminary breath test which found he was over the legal blood alcohol limit. Police also found a small amount of marijuana on the man.

The man had two cell phones on him, one of which rang when police verified a number the man had allegedly called 911 from. Police confiscated the cell phone, according to Krueger.

Krueger said the man was taken to Mower County Jail and was held until sober.
