The Austin Post 1216 VFW baseball team didn’t face a huge challenge at Marcusen Park Wednesday, but it took care of business as it swept Stewartville by scores of 13-0 in five innings and 14-4 in six innings.

Austin (6-2 overall, 3-1 District) had just seven hits in the first game, but Post 1216 had hitters reach base on a walk or a hit by pitch 10 times in the win.

Dylan Gasner went 2-for-2 with two RBIs in game one for Austin.

“We just wanted to stay back and see the ball deep,” Gasner said. “Don’t jump with the hands and take at-bats seriously. You don’t want to give away at-bats.”

Austin played most of its bench in the second game and Eli Kaercher came through with a pair of RBIs, including a triple that ended the game in the sixth. Kaercher also pitched two scoreless innings in the win.

In all, Austin had seven pitchers throw on Wednesday and they allowed just five hits and zero earned runs. Austin had 20 hits on the day.

“I was really happy how they hustled, they worked hard and they played very efficiently,” Austin head coach Joe Ciola said. “We wanted to stay ahead on the count and work on mechanics.”

Austin was coming off a big 3-2 win over Burnsville and the squad thinks it could be in for a successful summer.

“We know our potential now and we can beat tough teams,” Gasner said. “That should help us in districts.”
