GMLOS’s Kirtz headed to state in two events

Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Southland’s McKenzie Kirtz qualified for state in two events at the Section 1A track and field finals in Winona Thursday.

Kirtz, a junior, won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:19.77 and she took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.44. She will compete in both events at state.

Kirtz nearly won the 800-meter run as she finished just .05 of a second behind Pine Island’s Laura Torgeson.

Hayfield junior Cody Carpentier took second in the discus to qualify for state and he will also throw the shot put at state.

LP’s Kayla Christopherson took third in the 1600-meter run and she was just a little over a second from taking second and qualifying for state. Sarah Holtz finished fourth in the triple jump, but she will participate in the high jump at state.

The Class A state track and field meet will be held at Hamline Unviersity next Friday and Saturday.
