Best Bets: Family fun kicks off weekend for moms

Mother’s day is almost here. But last minute planners need not worry, there are some things going on over the weekend that people won’t want to miss.

1. Free Family Fun

6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, May 9 at Crane Community Chapel, 1111 Ninth St. NE

Get the family out for a free night of fun. There will be a family movie night, featuring “Home Beyond the Sun.” Children 15 and under should be accompanied by an adult.

2. Jazzy for Jazz

7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, May 9 at Christgau Hall in Austin High School

Come listen to the students of Austin perform a jazz concert that also features vocal jazz.

3. Plant a flower with your mom

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, Tammy’s Flowers and Crafts, 15327 590th Ave., Rose Creek

Get in the mood for spring and get your gardens ready.

Kids ages eight and under plant a flower for Mother’s Day for free. Local Crafters and Vendors will be there. City wide garage sales will also be going on.

4. Big Band Experience

7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE

Shaun Johnson is an Emmy-winning singer/songwriter and has recreated the Big Band sounds, with his own flair. Cost is $20 at the door, $15 in advance.

5. Sola Fide Viewing

9 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at Sola Fide Observatory

6. Belgian Waffles

9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, May 11, at St. Edward’s Corcoran Center 2001 Second Ave. NW, Austin

Instead of making breakfast, let your mom enjoy Belgian Waffles for Mother’s Day. Earl Risers Kiwanis sponsors this annual Dad’s Belgian Waffles All You Can Eat Fundraiser every year. Tickets are $7 per person and children five and under eat free. For more information, call (507) 396-6330.
