HAYFIELD — Lyle-Pacelli seventh grader Kayla Christopherson proved she could run with high schoolers during the cross country season and she’s proving she can do it in track and field season as well.

Christopherson, who ran in the state cross country meet this past fall, had a solid outing at the three-team Hayfield invite Thursday.

Christopherson won the 1600-meter run and she anchored LP’s first place 4 x 800-meter relay team.

Christopherson has proven she’s a solid distance runner, but she showed a little extra burst on Thursday as she had to crank up the speed down the stretch to edge out Faribault Bethlehem Academy’s Payton Putrah by a half second.

Christopherson ran a personal best time of 5:59.05 in the 1600-meter run and she’s adjusted to high school track just fine.

“It’s just about the same [as cross country],” Christopherson said. “The mile is easier, because in cross country you’re running two and a half miles or so. Someone actually just asked where I store all that energy for the stretch run.”

Chistopherson had the simplest of motivations to get her personal record time as she ran down the stretch.

“We we call it PR candy bar. When you get a PR you get a little candy bar,” Christopherson said. “That’s motivation.”

Hayfield won the girls meet with a score of 87 and LP was third with a 38.

LP’s Sarah Holtz won the high jump and the triple jump and Madison Truckenmiller won the 800-meter run and was on the first place LP 4 x 800 relay team.
