Austinites will have the chance to give a little input on the city’s rental housing issue this Saturday.

A rental housing forum sponsored by Vision 2020 will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, inside the Austin Public Library. Vision 2020 and the Austin Welcome Center will also provide a Spanish translator for the event.

The Austin City Council has discussed a rental ordinance for years to help regulate rental housing in Austin, and to help combat dilapidated rental properties. The council was close to passing a registration ordinance in 2011, but the issue was ultimately voted down. Council members made dilapidated properties and a rental ordinance one of their priorities last year, and condemned eight properties last summer after hearing resident complaints.

They’re not the only ones to hear complaints, however.

“One of the biggest issues we constantly hear about is the city’s rental housing,” Vision 2020’s Director of Vision Creation Laura Helle told the council in January.

The council’s recent ordinance discussions prompted Council Member Judy Enright to ask Vision 2020 organizers to help put on the rental housing forum this Saturday. Several council members will attend the meeting.
