Police warn of utilities call scam

Austin police say there are still people pretending to be utilities workers who try to scam residents out of cash.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said several area businesses and residents have received calls from someone pretending to work for Austin Utilities. The scammer will say a resident or business is behind on their utilities payment and service will be cut off unless they get a prepaid debit card and call 952-583-5709 with the number. Though no area businesses have reported losing money on this scam, police and utilities say the scam has happened in other areas.

“Do not give out any of your financial information,” Krueger said. “If it means sending any money out via Western Union or anything like that, it’s definitely a scam.”

Police and utility officials say residents shouldn’t get a cash card as a result of threatening phone calls. If residents receive a phone call regarding delinquent utility bills, they should contact Austin Utilities at 507-433-8886 or police at 507-437-9400.
