New year, new optimism

Austin has plenty to look forward to in 2014. The year is less than a week old, and Austin has already received word from several retail businesses planning to move to town. There is also more than $30 million in planned expansions and renovations this year, with The Hormel Institute topping that list.

There will be challenges, though, especially with how Austin businesses and residents deal with changes to health care, and how wisely the state legislature deals with a budget surplus. Austinites should also stay informed, as a meaningful election is on the horizon.

For now, there is more good news than bad, as Vision 2020 hopes for a substantive year, art takes center stage, and the Austin Packers athletic teams attempt to keep their successful pace.
