The Austin City Council could debate e-cigarette policy after a visit from a new state health expert.

Council Member Janet Anderson could push for an e-cigarette ban once a new coordinator for the State Health Improvement Program gives a presentation to the council next month.

Anderson heard a presentation at a recent Austin Housing and Redevelopment Authority meeting and wanted to bring in an expert to talk about e-cigarettes and other health issues for the city to discuss. There has been much discussion about the adverse health effects of e-cigarettes, and cities like Mankato have already banned e-cigarettes from public places similar to other tobacco products.

“Those are all things that we need to talk about and be aware of them and get up to date on what’s covered in our ordinance,” Anderson said.
