LA CROSSE, Wis. — Work has been temporarily halted near where a 19-year-old worker fell about 40 feet from the I-90 bridge.

The state’s project manager, Mark Anderson, says the site is the cofferdam at “pier two,” but work on the rest of the project is continuing.

Campbell Police Chief Tim Kelemen says the man, an Ames Construction worker, fell at about 9 a.m. Wednesday while installing concrete forms and was wearing a harness when rescuers reached him. He had life threatening injuries and underwent surgery.

Rhonda Burke, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Department of Labor, says the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate.

The state is currently constructing a new bridge over the Mississippi River, near Dresbach, Minn. to replace the current one.
