The Packers opened their girls hockey season with a flurry and they finished it with their best period of the night as they topped Waseca 9-5 in Riverside Arena Tuesday.

Austin sophomore forward Chloe Summerfield netted her first career hat trick for the Packers (1-0 overall) as she scored two goals in a two-minute stretch in the first period and added a third goal with 6:58 left in the second period.

Austin led 6-2 after the first period as they scored five goals in a five-minute stretch to jump out of the gates strong. Madison Overby had two of those goals and she also had two assists on the night for Austin.

“It was really important for us mentally with our new coach (to get a win.),” Overby said. “We were unsure of where we’d be and I think everybody’s now more excited than they were before.”

The Packers saw their lead slip to 8-5 after the second period, but they shut down the Bluejays in the third period as they outscored them 1-0 in the frame. Austin out-shot Waseca 36-27 in the win as Austin goalie Allison Hoban stopped 22 shots.

“We had some sparks in the first and second periods,” said Austin head coach Brett Vesel. “But there were times where we just weren’t moving our feet and weren’t getting to the puck. In the third period we did a really good job overall and that was nice to see.”

Austin senior Carissa Johnson had two goals in the win, and Mackenzie Trimble and Myia Hoium each had one goal.

“Some of our girls who didn’t play a lot last year got some quality time and we’re still trying to get them to gel,” Vesel said. “We had spurts of that tonight.”
