Robert W. Ackerwold, 90, of Austin, Minn., died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin.

Robert William Ackerwold was born Nov. 7, 1923, at Whitehall, Wis., the son of William and Corrine (Breed) Ackerwold. After his parent’s deaths at an early age, Bob moved to Minneapolis, where he was raised by his grandmother and an uncle. He graduated from Washburn High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He returned to Minnesota and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, graduating in 1949. Bob taught history in Blooming Prairie, Minn. He was married to Dorothy  Walledom in New Richland, Minn., in 1954. They lived  in Blooming Prairie until 1962, when the Ackerwolds moved their family to Austin where Bob was a guidance counselor at Austin High School until he retired in 1987.

Bob was an automotive historian and enjoyed classic cars. The Ackerwolds traveled in retirement and spent a portion of the winter in Florida. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church Noon Kiwanis and served on the Austin Park and Recreation Board and the Austin Public Library Board.

Bob is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Austin; daughter, Kari Bain, of Austin; son, Robert Ackerwold, of Mayer, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law,  Liz and Neal Erickson, of Austin; nine grandchildren, Eric Bain, Jonathan Bain, Daniel Ackerwold, Megan Erickson, Sarah Bain, Thomas Ackerwold,  Annie Erickson, Laura Ackerwold and Tim Erickson.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, uncle, Samuel Ackerwold, and son-in-law, Ian Bain.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with the Reverend Glenn L. Monson officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery with Austin Post 91 American Legion in charge of military rites. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary.
