Russell Pihlstrom said it has been a good run, but he will close his coffee shop, Gymocha, by the end of the year.

Russell cites not enough business, too much competition, and costs like property taxes, utilities and the property’s mortgage as reasons for closing.

“At the end of the day, every business fails because it wasn’t able to drive enough traffic through the door,” he said.

He said Gymocha, which he owns with his wife, Cindy, will stay open through roughly Dec. 29.

The café, at 1300 14th St. NW, opened in February 2010 at the former Hardee’s. It was originally supposed to include a children’s gym (hence the name Gymocha), but they shifted gears before they opened and have since focused on specialty coffees and teas, gourmet sandwiches, soups, and fresh baked goods like scones and muffins.

Gymocha has about seven employees.

“Austin has been great, and my wife and I have felt blessed to serve the community,” Russell said.
