The Austin City Council will likely approve the Fire Civil Service Committee’s recommendation to hire Rochester Fire Captain James McCoy as Austin’s new fire chief during the upcoming council meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, inside City Council Chambers.

The committee unanimously agreed upon McCoy and recommended him to the council during a Nov. 4 work session.

McCoy would replace former Fire Chief Mickey Healey, who left the department earlier this year to take a job in Texas.

The council will also set a public hearing on the annexation of 28 homes northwest of Austin in the Turtle Creek 1 neighborhood for Dec. 2. Neighborhood residents approached the council asking to be annexed earlier this year to get access to the city’s sewer and water systems.
