Ethan Johnson and Rachel Wahlert of Austin High School are the Rotary Club students of the month for October. The students were selected for being seniors who excel in academics, leadership and extracurricular activities.
Johnson is extensively involved in music, including the Austinaires, vocal jazz, choir, orchestra and string quartet, for which he has received multiple honors. He is in National Honor Society, on the student council and involved in drama club. He is consistently on the honor roll.
Johnson, who plans to attend a four-year college for music and another major, said, “High School has been absolutely fantastic.”
He has enjoyed Rotary presentations and meeting interesting people within the club.
Wahlert, who previously lived in China and Spain, is involved in the community by serving on the Mower-Freeborn American Red Cross board. She plays volleyball and is in National Honor Society, Link Crew, SAFE, concert choir and wind ensemble.
Wahlert received a $500 scholarship from the Red Cross and a Youth Service America Summer of Service Award. She plans to obtain a four-year degree and may pursue a master’s.
Wahlert is grateful to Rotary club, enjoyed her experience in RYLA and is excited to be a counselor this year.
