Approximately 330 bowlers will be in Echo Lanes this Saturday for the Special Olympics Minnesota Area 10 Bowling Tournament and the competitors will range from novices to veterans.

A couple of local bowlers — Steven Mallon, a 62-year old, and Tyra Wiles, 13-year old — will be competing this weekend and they cover both ends of the age spectrum.

Mallon has bowled for 10 years and he will be competing in the USA Special Olympics games in New Jersey in 2014 for bowling.

Wiles has bowled for two years, but she’s already enthusiastic about the sport.

Wiles is the youngest Special Olympics bowler in the Austin area.

“All she talks about is getting on the bus and going to the tournament,” said Linda Gibeau, who is Wiles’ mom. “That’s a highlight. She really loves bowling and she can do it forever.”

Mallon has bowled a two-game series of 325 before and he’s looking forward to this Saturday.

He said the tournament is mostly about having a good time.

“It’s just for fun and it’s good for practicing,” Mallon said.
