The Austin girls soccer team couldn’t overcome a slow start as it lost its season opener 2-0 to Fairmont at Art Hass Stadium Thursday.

The Packers (0-1 overall) came out a little flat as Fairmont posted its first goal in the fifth minute and it added another score in the 21st minute.

“The girls were nervous in the beginning,” Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said. “Then they scored a goal to make them a little more nervous and that gets in your mind.”

Austin played much better for the last six minutes as it came up with eight of its nine shots on goal in that time frame. Hannah Voogd and Stephanie Chandler each had big shots in the second half that were stopped on jumping saves by Fairmont’s keeper.

“The positive thing was that the girls stood up and didn’t give up,” Camarena-Corzo said. “We had six or seven clear opportunities and their goalie had some amazing saves. There were also some shots we need to practice a little more.”

Austin sophomore Chloe Summerfield had eight saves in the loss and the Packers will now look to Saturday’s game against Worthington at Art Hass Stadium at 4 p.m.

“We need to give all of the credit to the other team. They played really good,” Camarena-Corzo said. “Unfortunately you want to win that first game, especially when it’s at home. We just need to forget about and move on to our next game.”
