Police: Garage sale signs have their place

For those wondering why their garage sale signs are disappearing, there may be a simple answer: city ordinance.

The Austin Police Department has removed several signs this summer, said Police Chief Brian Krueger, as there are designated locations for signs. Residents may post signs in their own yards, at the bottom of Skinner’s Hill at Second Drive and Ninth Place Southwest and near Packer arena, at Fifth Avenue and Seventh Street Northeast.

Placing signs along other public roadways in the city is not allowed, and community service officers will remove them.

While signs may not be placed along most public roadways in Austin, there is a loophole. A legally parked vehicle may carry a sign.
