Number of abortions performed in Minn. drops again

MINNEAPOLIS — The number of abortions performed in Minnesota has dropped again.

New figures from the Minnesota Department of Health show the number of abortions performed in Minnesota dropped from just over 11,000 in 2011 to about 10,700 in 2012, for a decrease of 370. And the number of abortions involving Minnesota teenagers has fallen by almost half over the past five years.

Opponents and supporters of abortion rights agree it’s good news but disagree on why the numbers are declining.

Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life spokesman Bill Poehler says it indicates women are turning away from abortion and are choosing to give birth to their babies.

But Sarah Stoesz (stays), president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, credits better access to birth control.
