Local schools, mascots on hand for Deer Creek races

Finally, it was another perfect day for racing on the annual Mascot Night at the speedway. Local schools were on hand with their school mascots along with mascots from local sports teams and Victor from the Minnesota Vikings Their cause was to raise additional money for the schools that participated, with more than $8,000 being raised on the night through silent auctions and fundraising activities.

The first feature of the night was the Left Lane Transport USRA B-Modifieds. Cole Queensland led from the drop of the green on the third restart. Brandon Hare moved into second with Mark Motl in third. Hare quickly moved up to battle Queensland for the lead but was unable to make a pass. Another restart on lap six saw Queensland leading while a four-wide battle for second ensued behind him. Hare and Crapser continued the battle for second until it was determined Crapser had jumped the start, docking him two spots on the next restart or the end of the race. Crapser led lap nine with Hare in second as Queensland had pushed in two and dropped back to third. Another caution flew on lap fifteen. Hare led with Crapser docked back to third. Crapser and Queensland battled for second and on lap eighteen Crapser took over the second spot but up front Hare had built a comfortable enough lead to take home the win. He was followed to the line by Crapser, Queensland, Wheeler and Moudry.

Kory Adams and his dad Bernie Adams paced the field for the SixTwo Graphics WISSOTA Street Stock feature event. Bernie got the jump and took off into the lead with Kory in second. On lap two Danny Richards worked past Kory for the second spot and set out after Bernie up front. With five down, Bernie slipped in turn two slightly, and it was enough to allow Richards to take over the top spot. With ten down Mike Blowers and Kory battled side by side for the third spot. They continued their race for the next five laps until a restart slowed their battle. On the restart Richards took off into the lead and held on for the win. Bernie Adams, Blowers, Kory Adams and Shaun Mann rounded out the top five.

Mike Mehling jumped out front in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event with Don Schaefer in second. With three down Tony Schill worked into the third spot. With five down Dustin Scott, Schill and Schaefer were three wide for second. Scott took the spot, and on lap six the caution flew over the field. On the restart, Mehling led with Scott now in second. Mehling held onto the second spot with Schill, Jared Boumeester and Justin Oestreich rounding out the top five. With 12 down, Schill worked under Mehling to take over second just as Boumeester started to work the high line on Mehling now for third. Mehling, Schill and Boumeester had a great battle for the next three laps with Boumeester finally taking over the second spot. Mehling held onto third over Schill until lap 16. Schill pushed up the hill on the final corner slowing Mehling’s momentum slightly and allowing Oestreich to take over the third spot. Mehling was able to dive under Schill to take over the fourth spot as the checkers flew over the field.

Schatney Sanders led at the drop of the green in the Wagner Trucking Super Stocks. Joey Jensen quickly worked into the second spot with Kelly Anderson and Kevin Hager battling for third. With two down, Anderson worked into third. On lap three Jensen and Sanders were side by side for the lead while Jeff Brauer worked into the fourth spot. Jensen took the lead on lap four with Sanders retaking it on lap six. With seven down Jensen changed lines and blasted back into the lead. On lap 14, Anderson and Sanders were battling for the second spot. They continued to race for the spot until lap eighteen when Anderson finally gained control of the second spot. Jensen took home the win ahead of Anderson, Sanders, Brauer and Tommy Richards.

The Altenburg Construction WISSOTA Late Models raced four wide for the lead down the backstretch on lap one. Neil Eckhart came out with the lead at the completion of the first lap. Robby Bunkelman quickly moved into second with Jerry Bloom in third. With five complete, Bloom, Eckhart and Bunkelman were three wide for the lead as the caution flew. On the restart Eckhart led with Bloom and Bunkelman battling for position. Eckhart held onto the lead with Bunkelman in second. Kyle Jumbeck moved under Bloom for the third spot. On Lap 10, a restart saw Eckhart get out of shape as they came through turn four bringing out another caution and handing Bunkelman the lead. Jumbeck sat in third with Nick Beyenhof moving into the third spot. Another caution on lap 14 saw Bunkelman leading with Lance Matthees and Beyenhof battling for third behind Jumbeck Matthees took the spot and pressured Jumbeck for the second spot, but up front Bunkelman was all alone as he cruised home for his first win at the creek and his first ever WISSOTA Late Model feature win.

Brandon Davis started on the pole for the NAPA AutoCare USRA Modified feature event. Game over … Although Davis was fast and alone up front, there was some great action through the rest of the field. On lap three Jake Timm slid sideways in turn three while running in the top three. Eric Pember had no place to go and drover straight into Timm’s machine sending it tumbling over. Everyone was fine, and Pember went to the pits made some minor repairs and was back out racing. On the restart, Davis led with Lucas Schott in second spot. Keith Foss ran in the third spot but about lap seven everyone started to look further back in the field. Jason Cummins started 12th and by lap 10 had moved into the top five. Cummins kept the crowd entertained and worked into fourth on lap twelve. On lap 13 he worked past Foss for third and then took over the second spot after moving past Schott on lap 22. Unfortunately, Cummins had a fast car but after Davis ran out front all alone for the last half of the race, he had built up a sizeable lead and with no caution Davis cruised home with the win. Cummins, Schott, Foss and Josh Angst rounded out the top five.

Racing action resumes next week, Wednesday through Saturday with the 3rd annual Bauer Built — Hanson Tire service World Modified Dirt Track Championship. The feature pays $20,000 to the winner after 100 laps on Saturday night.
