ST. PAUL, Minn. — Friday is the last day to apply for a marriage license in Minnesota if you want to get married on Aug. 1, the day same-sex unions become legal in the state.

There’s a five-day waiting period for a license in Minnesota. Some counties chose to make the same-sex marriage applications available early so couples will have the license by Aug. 1. Hennepin County started accepting applications June 6 and other counties in the metro area followed suit.

Minnesota Public Radio News says St. Louis County in northeastern Minnesota started offering the applications Friday. Benton County won’t offer the license application to same-gender couples until Aug. 1.
