ST. PAUL — Blooming Prairie senior Michael Thomas is glad he listened to his parents this spring.

After he nearly didn’t go out for track and field this season, Thomas made his first Class ‘A’ state track and field meet count at Hamline University Saturday.

Thomas took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.59 seconds and sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.84 seconds.

“I wasn’t even thinking about going out for track this year,” Thomas said. “I was going to get a job and my parents convinced me to go out.”

Instead Thomas, who also took 17th in the high jump after missing three jumps, made some big waves in his first state meet, and he’s even considering trying track in college now.

“This was more than I thought it would be and it was exciting seeing all these people here to watch a track meet,” Thomas said. “Most of the time people just forget about them. Everyone loves the sport here.”

Thomas had a lot of adrenaline in the 400, but he had to run the 200 shortly after when the meet was sped up due to possible incoming weather.

“I was still a little bit tired from the 400,” Thomas said. “I didn’t get the break I was supposed to get, but everybody had to deal with it.”
