The Austin VFW Post 1216 baseball team took care of business as it swept Cannon Falls by scores of 10-0 in five innings and 13-3 in five innings in Marcusen Park Friday.

Austin (8-2 overall, 3-1 District) out-hit Cannon Falls 26-4 on the night as Isaac Schumacher pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener.

“They played hard, they had fun and they played the entire game for both games,” Austin head coach Joe Ciola said. “There’s a great core of kids here that like to play baseball and they’re very talented.”

Austin’s Jake Reinartz made a couple of highlight plays in the second game as he threw out two runners at the plate from center field.

“On the second one I heard the third base coach yelling tag so I was ready. On the first one I didn’t hear it, but I looked up and threw it,” Reinartz said. “We’re always looking to improve and we had two great games today.”

Schumacher had a big day at the plate for Austin as he finished 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and an RBI.

“I’m feeling good recently. It’s coming along,” Schumacher said. “We knew they were a good team coming in, but we felt confident in ourselves having a good chance to beat them.”

Schumacher, who played on the Legion baseball team last summer, is enjoying his time with the VFW baseball squad this summer.

“I think our team could go pretty far this year,” he said. “Our goal is not just to go to state, but we feel we have a chance to win it.”
