Goodbye spring, hello summer travel season

It is hard to believe that we are moving into summer travel already.

We are looking forward to our next trip on June 14, which will be at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis.

“War Horse” is a blast of pure theatrical imagination that promises to be awe-inspiring. The show features life-sized puppets of horses big enough for people to ride.

This production will take you from the English countryside to the battlefields of World War I.

A boy and his horse are separated when the horse is sold to the military, and he enlists on an emotional mission to unite with his beloved horse.

This is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship.

We will be departing at 9 a.m. from the Walmart parking lot.

•June 27: Clear Lake, Iowa

Spend a summer day at the resort town of Clear Lake, as we embark on our first boat tour of the season on The Lady of the Lake, an authentic sternwheeler paddleboat.

This boat features an open-air upper deck and enclosed main deck to escape the sun or rain.

We will visit the Surf Ballroom and museum, which is one of the last remaining ballrooms in the Midwest which features nationally known and locally recognized musicians on stage. The Surf also holds a place in history as the final concert of Buddy Holly, JP “The Big Bopper” Ricardson and Ritchie Valens.

A visit to the Central Gardens of North Iowa will showcase 22 themed gardens.

Spending time in their central park across from the lake will provide time to take in their summer events at their weekly Thursdays on Main. There will be music, car shows and venders as we stroll down their Main Street. We will depart at noon and return at about 9 p.m.

•July 10 “Happy Days” at the Marion Ross theater in Albert Lea

In a rare visit to her birth place, Marion Ross will be making a guest appearance on opening night at the theater. Fee is due by June 20. Departure time will be 3:30 p.m. with a special city tour and dinner prior to the show.

•July 31 “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”

This trip will be to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater, in Chanhassen, Minn.

We plan a trip at this time each year. This is always a great production, and a cool summer place in one of the Twin Cities’ finest theaters.

This play is the beloved story of Joseph, favorite son of Jacob, who is given the coat of many colors. There are 22 major production numbers plus the colorful costuming, and creative staging that come together to make this a show you can never see too often. The Chanhassen continues to offer a choice of great entrees, and now tempts guests with delicious desserts.
