More than 200 Mower County homes were without power Thursday afternoon after an overnight snowstorm blanketed the area, but utilities companies said there aren’t any major outages in Austin.
Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services officers say more than 630 homes were without power as of 9 a.m. In Mower County, about 100 residents in Austin, Lansing, Red Rock, Carlston, Moscow and Nevada townships reported power outages this morning. More power outages were reported in Austin and Lansing Townships, with 73 residents in Austin Township without power and 93 in Lansing Township as of noon.
Homes in Austin fared much better, though Austin Utilities officials reported minor outages throughout the community. There were about six reports of power outages, including 12 homes without power in the southwest part of town, according to Tom Tylutki, electric distribution director.
“Austin is doing well at this point,” Tylutki said.
Austin Utilities officials said none of the main substations or feeders were affected by snow Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but increasing winds Thursday afternoon could pose problems. Tylutki said most reports to the utilities company Thursday were about cable TV and other communication wires malfunctioning.
Alliant Energy reported one Mower County home without power.
Freeborn County is experiencing major outages, with hundreds of rural residents and almost 3,000 Albert Lea residents without power. Mary Nelson, executive assistant of communications for Freeborn-Mower Coop, urged residents to call in if their power goes out, as utilities workers won’t immediately know which power lines were down and which homes were without service.
“Out in the rural community, a lot of the rural outages that we’re seeing are due to fallen trees on the lines,” Nelson said. “It could be the lines fell on a portion that’s only serving one household. If that member doesn’t call, we don’t know that they’re out power.”
Residents experiencing power outages can call Freeborn-Mower Coop at 800-734-6421 or 507-373-6421. Austin residents can call 507-433-8886. Alliant Energy customers in Minnesota can call 877-740-5050 to report a power outage.
