The two were married for 60 years. He enlisted in the Air Force and graduated from the University of Minnesota.

Together they had three children, Debra (Mark) Hurrle, Scott, Robyn (Jim) Tretter; six grandchildren, Adam (Nicole), Eric, Brian, Jacob (Olivia) Andy and Danielle; and three great-grandkids, Alex, Ashleigh and Sierra. Vern was committed to his Christian faith and showed it everyday in how he lived his life.
