Baseball: Vikings drop two to LancersPublished 6:45pm Sunday, April 14, 2013
LA CRESCENT — The Hayfield baseball team opened its season with a pair of one-run losses in a doubleheader at La Crescent (2-0 overall) Saturday.
The Vikings (0-2 overall) lost the first game 6-5 in eight innings and dropped the nightcap 7-6.
The Lancers executed a suicide squeeze play with one out to win the first game in the bottom of the eighth. Hayfield had the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh with the top of its order up, but it couldn’t come up with a hit.
“You could tell it was our first time outside,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We made some errors that I don’t expect us to make later in the season.”
Hayfield sophomore Cam Rutledge finished the day 5-for-8 with 4 RBIs, four stolen bases and three runs scored.
