LIVE: Packers win on layup in final seconds

Published 6:24pm Saturday, March 9, 2013

The Packers boys basketball team dodged a giant upset Saturday as Ajuda Nywesh made a layup in the final seconds to give Austin a 51-49 win over the Winona Winhawks in the Class 1AAA Sectional semifinal.

The undefeated and top-seeded Packers trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, their largest deficit of the season. Up 47-46, No. 4 seed Winona’s Dan Schwartz made a layup with less than two minutes to play to make it 49-46. But Joe Aase drained a wild 3-pointer to tie it up at 49-49. After a Winhawk turnover, the Packers held for the last shot.

The Packers will face the Red Wing Wingers in the sectional final and a chance to go to state.

I predicted this team 2 years ago and I’ve followed them all season with sheer delight. This is only MY opinion so maybe it won’t mean much but when you’re 26-0 you have to start playing a far more dominant game to achieve the final goal, especially against mediocre teams. 3 pointers are great when your hitting them but when they aren’t dropping you must play better defense and rebound better than your opponent. Red Wing had better be an easy win or the state will be much much tougher. Win lose or draw Austin can be tremendously proud of the coach and the players this year. Ove Berven once said some of the best kids he coached never started, so keep in mind this game is about the hopes and dreams of winners and losers, trying to do their best. Go Pack.
