LA CRESCENT — It didn’t come without some drama, but the Hayfield girls locked up their first HVL Gold Division title since they joined the conference at least 20 years ago when they beat La Cresecent (7-17 overall, 2-9 HVL Gold) 65-61 in overtime on the road Tuesday.
Hayfield (17-7 overall, 10-2 HVL Gold) led throughout regulation until the Lancers scored with six seconds left to force overtime.
Hayfield made 8-of-10 free throws in the extra session to get the win.
“We’ve had some nice real teams over the years, but we’ve always banged heads with the some of the best teams in Southeast Minnesota,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “We feel very fortunate to win a conference that’s always solid top to bottom.”
Dani Wagner led the Vikings with 23 points and Abby Pollock added 19.
“Dani came to play tonight and she played with a new fire,” Kindschy said.
The Vikings will host either Pine Island or Goodhue in the HVL title game Monday at 7:30 p.m.
