Lyle M. Spande, 85, Austin

Lyle M. Spande, 85, of Austin, Minn., passed away Friday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2013, at Austin Mayo Health Systems.

Lyle was born March 21, 1927, to Herme and Martha (Ekker) Spande at the family farm in Preble Township, Fillmore County, Minn. Herme passed away when Lyle was 6 and several years later, his mother and two brothers moved to Austin. Lyle worked at Hormel for a while and was sworn in to the Navy on his 17th birthday. He served in the south Pacific and was present at the atom bomb test in August 1945.

Nov. 12, 1947, he married Nina Buck of Austin. They made their home in San Francisco until he was honorably discharged from the Navy. Then they returned to Austin, where Lyle went to work for Hormel again and worked there for 39 years. When he retired, he and Nina spent their winters in Yuma, Ariz., and their summers in Austin.

Lyle is survived by his wife of 65 years; two sons, Terry (Helga) of New Hampshire and Steve (Susan) of Minneapolis; two grandsons, Alexis (Amy) of Colorado and Luke of Minneapolis; granddaughter Heidi of Vancouver Island, Canada; three great-grandsons; brother, Kenneth (Patricia) of Oregon; sister-in-law Beverly of Winona, Minn.; brother-in-law Loren Sutherland (Marion) of Sun City West, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Herme and Martha Spande; brother Curtis; nephew David; father-in-law Kenneth Buck; mother-in-law Gwen Buck; sister-in-law Jo Ann Sutherland.

Lyle donated his body to science. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
