The Packer gymnasts are mostly focused on Friday, when they will be chasing after their first Class ‘A’ team title in school history.

But Austin also has plenty of chances to make some noise at the Class ‘A’ individual state meet as well, which takes place Saturday at 11 a.m. in the University of Minnesota Pavilion.

Austin senior Sela Fadness will be back to defend her state floor championship, after she tied for first in the event last season with Melrose’s Hailey Brinkman. Fadness also has a chance to do well in the all-around competition as she took third in the all-around this year.

Right now Fadness is just hoping to keep her nerves in check.

“I’m really excited,” Fadness said. “Hopefully things work out and we’ll see where it puts me. I’m trying not to worry about it.”

Fadness will have some company in all four of her events as sophomore Abby Bickler, who took fourth in the floor and 16th in the all-around last year and eighth grader Maddie Mullenbach, will also be competing in the all-around competition.

Austin sophomore Carolyn Hackel will compete on the floor and senior Abby Snater will compete in her first individual state meet on the beam.

“We’ve got a great set of girls with a great focus and with five girls floating around they’ll have a sense of team. That helps a lot,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “I’m excited about both days. I think we have a real good possibility of representing Austin very well.”
