Colvard pushes Bruins past BobcatsPublished 9:46pm Friday, February 22, 2013
With a chance to give the Austin Bruins a big win, Riley Colvard went with a move that he’s done so many times in practice that it doesn’t work anymore.mystery
But it worked on Friday and Colvard scored the game winning goal in a shootout to give the Bruins a 4-3 win over Bismarck in Riverside Arena.
Jay Dickman and Drew Anderson each scored shootout goals for Austin (35-8-6 overall), but Bismarck’s Adam Knochenmus tied the shootout at 2 when he scored on Bismarck’s last chance.
That gave Colvard a shot to win the game and he took advantage.
“It’s a move I do a lot in practice but it doesn’t really work against our goalies anymore . I was watching the guys before me and he was coming out real far,” Colvard said. “Every time they made a move he had his legs real wide, so did a little fake and went five hole.”
Austin took a 2-1 lead on a Cody Dixon goal to open the third period but the Bobcats (27-14-6 overall) stormed back in the game when Stanislav Dzakhov scored a transition goal and Patrick Moore put in a one-timer to put Bismarck up in front 3-2 with 14:45 left in the game.
Austin finally tied it up with 2:29 left when Drew Anderson rebounded his own miss and put one through the back of the net.
Austin head coach Chris Tok said it was a big win for his team.
“Their team’s gotten a lot better throughout the course of the year,” Tok said. “They’re in second place and they’re right on our heels. They’re still the defending champs until we take it away from them.”
Jason Pawloski had 30 saves for the Bruins and he stopped three of the shots he saw in the shootout.
“I wouldn’t say he had his greatest game five on five. But he’s a battler and he’s a real competitive kid,” Tok said. “We trust him and Nick (Lehr) in the net.”
