Now in her second term, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., has landed top committee post and also been appointed to the president’s Export Council.

Klobuchar was announced Thursday as chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, a panel within the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Minnesota has had relatively low seniority in the Senate, where longevity is critical. Klobuchar won a second term in November, the first Minnesota senator with multiple terms since Democratic Paul Wellstone won a second six-year stint in 1996.

In the Minnesota delegation, Republican Rep. John Kline is chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee.

On Friday, Klobuchar was appointed to serve on President Obama’s Export Council. The council is the primary national advisory committee on international trade and assists the president with matters affecting U.S. trade.

It including policies and programs promoting export expansion and work to resolve trade-related issues in the business, industrial, agricultural, labor and government sectors.

“Exports are literally a world of opportunity,” said Klobuchar. “In order to compete in the global economy we need to make sure our businesses and farmers can capitalize on these opportunities and access international markets.”
