Maurice Lester Johnson, 92, passed away on Jan. 11, 2013, at his home in Hayfield, Minn.

Maurice was born on Jan. 18, 1920, the son of Ole and Alvina (Evenson) Johnson in Dodge County, Minnesota. Maurice was a life time member of Evanger Lutheran Church. He was baptized, confirmed and married at Evanger. Maurice served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, during World War II, in Africa and Italy. He moved to Rochester, Minn., in 1951, where he worked in construction until his retirement in 1985. He moved to Crestview Villa in 2002, where he resided until his death. Maurice enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, doing puzzles, working in his yard and garden, and reminiscing about old times.

Maurice is survived by his son, DeBlonde (Mary) Johnson, Deerwood, Minn.; daughter, Lisa (Bill) Burt, Rochester; four grandchildren, Thad, Neil, Alec and Emily; five great-grandchildren, Rachel, Luke, Cade, Adele and Landon; two sisters, Luella Schieck and Ruth (Beaumont) Senjem, both of Hayfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis on May 30, 2008; five brothers, Manton, Alfred, Otis, Ruben and Stanley; and one sister, Aletta.

The funeral service for Maurice Lester Johnson will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at Evanger Lutheran Church, 33554 660th Ave., Sargeant, Minn., with the Rev. Dwight Dobell officiating. Interment will be in Evanger Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by the Hayfield American Legion, Post No. 330. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, 501 Second St. NW in Hayfield and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
