ADAMS — The Southland girls basketball team fell to No. 2 ranked New Richland-HEG (5-1 overall) 78-71 in Adams Tuesday.

The Rebels (5-2 overall) held their own as they puled to within four with 3:30 left in the game, but they couldn’t stop NRHEG junior Carlie Wagner as she poured in 50 points.

“She had to work for all of them,” Southland head coach Bob Sheehan said. “There were times she was going one on four. We played good defense, but sometimes she just made shots.”

Southland seniors Haley Kirkpatrick and Jana Schammel each scored 20 points to keep their team close.

“We proved we can play with the better teams in the state and the girls are starting to believe in themselves,” Sheehan said.
